Maker spaces and small-scale production studios abound as friends and neighbors are eager to create recreationally and stoke their entrepreneurial ambitions.Bespoke furniture maker, designer and traveling teacher Michelle Lipson is ready and waiting to work with the next round of future artisans. She will host two-hands on events in her Port Richmond studio during the 2018 DesignPhiladelphia Festival to enlighten the still curious about how furniture is made.  Each two-hour session kicks off with a talk on the maker movement’s role in the economy, as a source for recreational opportunities and as a gateway to entrepreneurship. The contemporary practice of furniture making, from custom design to small-scale production, will also be discussed, as well as ways of using new tools to inform design and construction. These talking points, followed by a demo showing how parts are cut on the CNC machine, will provide context for the hands-on workshop.  Participants will collaborate, mixing and matching pre-cut parts and assembling tables of their own.  Names will be drawn out of a hat to see who gets to take them home!   RSVP for the talk/demo or purchase tickets to build a table here https://www.facebook.com/pg/MichelleLipsonWoodworking/events/?ref=page_i...$12 Tickets to build tables  Free for the talk and CNC demo RSVPing “going” to the Facebook event is appreciated. About ML Woodworking Michelle Lipson has over 20 years of experience designing and building custom furniture. She teaches group continuing ed classes at a maker space in Brooklyn and hosts semi-regular group instruction at her studio in Port Richmond.    MLW now offers classes that combine new technology and tools with traditional building practices and give students a strong foundation of technical skills. These detailed, guided classes can safely navigate beginners through more complicated projects and exponentially benefit design professionals who understand the big picture, but who lack the hands-on experience in the shop to give their designs integrity. The classes reflect the way small businesses are manufacturing products today: with a focus on teamwork between colleagues, an eye toward problem-solving a with technology, an emphasis on accuracy and craftsmanship, and an interest in collaboration with other local artisans.  Michelle firmly believes building is fun, develops our problem-solving abilities and can be a great asset in community building.   About DesignPhiladelphiaDesignPhiladelphia, a signature event of the Center for Architecture and Design, is the oldest design event of its kind in the country and annually showcases the work of practicing architects, designers, and creative professionals.
